The Essential Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part 2

As we have dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a game of skill and luck. The goal is to shift your chips carefully around the board to your inside board and at the same time your opponent shifts their checkers toward their home board in the opposite direction. With competing player chips shifting in opposing directions there is going to be conflict and the need for particular techniques at particular times. Here are the last two Backgammon tactics to round out your game.

The Priming Game Tactic

If the purpose of the blocking tactic is to slow down the opponent to move her checkers, the Priming Game strategy is to completely stop any activity of the opposing player by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s pieces will either get bumped, or result a damaged position if he ever attempts to leave the wall. The trap of the prime can be setup anyplace between point 2 and point eleven in your game board. Once you’ve successfully assembled the prime to prevent the activity of the competitor, the opponent doesn’t even get to toss the dice, and you shift your checkers and roll the dice again. You’ll be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Strategy

The goals of the Back Game plan and the Blocking Game plan are similar – to harm your opponent’s positions hoping to better your chances of winning, however the Back Game plan utilizes seperate tactics to achieve that. The Back Game strategy is commonly used when you are far behind your competitor. To compete in Backgammon with this technique, you need to control 2 or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This technique is more difficult than others to play in Backgammon because it requires careful movement of your pieces and how the checkers are moved is partially the outcome of the dice roll.
