The Basics of Backgammon Game Plans – Part Two

As we dicussed in the last article, Backgammon is a casino game of skill and luck. The goal is to shift your chips carefully around the game board to your home board while at the same time your opposition shifts their chips toward their inner board in the opposite direction. With opposing player chips moving in opposite directions there is bound to be conflict and the need for particular tactics at specific times. Here are the last 2 Backgammon tactics to finish off your game.

The Priming Game Plan

If the goal of the blocking tactic is to hamper the opponents ability to move his chips, the Priming Game plan is to absolutely block any movement of the opposing player by building a prime – ideally 6 points in a row. The opponent’s chips will either get bumped, or end up in a bad position if he/she at all tries to leave the wall. The ambush of the prime can be built anywhere between point 2 and point eleven in your game board. As soon as you have successfully constructed the prime to stop the activity of your competitor, the competitor does not even get a chance to toss the dice, and you move your pieces and toss the dice again. You will be a winner for sure.

The Back Game Plan

The objectives of the Back Game strategy and the Blocking Game plan are very similar – to hinder your opponent’s positions in hope to improve your chances of succeeding, however the Back Game tactic uses alternate techniques to achieve that. The Back Game strategy is commonly employed when you’re far behind your opponent. To participate in Backgammon with this plan, you need to control two or more points in table, and to hit a blot (a single checker) late in the game. This tactic is more challenging than others to use in Backgammon seeing as it needs careful movement of your pieces and how the checkers are moved is partially the result of the dice roll.
