The Essential Basics of Backgammon Tactics – Part One

The objective of a Backgammon match is to move your pieces around the game board and bear them off the game board faster than your challenger who works harder to achieve the same buthowever they move in the opposite direction. Winning a match of Backgammon needsrequires both strategy and luck. How far you can move your chips is up to the numbers from tossing a pair of dice, and how you move your pieces are determined by your overall playing tactics. Players use different tactics in the different parts of a match dependent on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Tactic

The goal of the Running Game tactic is to bring all your pieces into your inside board and pull them off as quickly as you can. This tactic focuses on the speed of moving your pieces with absolutely no time spent to hit or stop your competitor’s checkers. The best time to employ this technique is when you think you can shift your own pieces quicker than your opposing player does: when 1) you have less checkers on the game board; 2) all your chips have moved beyond your competitor’s checkers; or 3) the opposing player doesn’t use the hitting or blocking technique.

The Blocking Game Plan

The primary aim of the blocking strategy, by the title, is to stop the competitor’s chips, temporarily, not worrying about moving your checkers quickly. After you have created the blockage for the competitor’s movement with a few pieces, you can move your other chips rapidly off the board. The player should also have a clear strategy when to back off and shift the checkers that you used for the blockade. The game gets intriguing when the opponent utilizes the same blocking strategy.
