Backgammon is the oldest game in recorded history. It has been known as the "little war," backgammon appeared in Mesopotamia (now referred to as Iraq) approximately 5 millennia ago. However, Egyptians called backgammon "Senat," which is a similar form of the present game played right now. Centuries ago, only people in influence, the ruling figures of aristocracy like Egyptian kings, were able to play. The game started to spread worldwide over time. Many different Backgammon variants have been created in several states and civilizations, but the main rules of those variations look like those of the archaic form . For instance, The Greeks grabbed a hold of the game and called it by the name "bac gamen." From there, the Anglo’s borrowed backgammon in the 1600’s and have remained with it ever since. Backgammon and different old games were never approved by most clergy. The churchgoers believe that the game was the work of the Devil. This led clergy to blacklist and burn the game. The ban and burning did not stop people enjoying games and enjoying themselves.

Computers give a new arena for Backgammon. When various electronic games are for sale all over the place, computer scientists in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been using Backgammon for assessing, advancing and testing AI theories and formulas as a result of the ease of game policies and difficulties of plans.
